Description

​​​The course aims to introduce STEM projects and state-of-the-art technologies in science and engineering to solve environmental problems in daily life. This experiential course will provide an overview to potential students who wish to engage in STEM education. Students will design and develop a prototype through various innovative learning activities under the guidance of instructors, explain the underlying scientific principles, integrate the multidisciplinary knowledge with innovation and creativity to critically evaluate complex, real-world problems. The course also serves to strengthen students’ concepts in science and engineering, and improves their organization and presentation skills, which are important in their future study.

Prof. Frank LAM
Description
Prof Leung Yuk Frank LAM is the Associate Dean of Students and an Assistant Professor of Engineering Education at the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST). A dedicated alumnus, he earned his PhD in Chemical Engineering from HKUST in 2005 and has since become a cornerstone of the Department of Chemical and Biological Engineering. His academic research focuses on environmental sustainability, specifically in wastewater treatment, nanotechnology, and hydrogen energy. Beyond his technical expertise, Dr. Lam is a highly decorated educator, having received the university-wide Thetos Teaching Award and multiple Best Teaching Awards for his innovative use of virtual reality and experiential learning in the classroom. In his administrative capacity, he works extensively on student well-being and campus life, bridging the gap between rigorous engineering education and holistic student development.

Prof. Cindy LAM
Description
Prof. Cindy Ka Sin Lam is an Assistant Professor of Science Education within the Department of Ocean Science at the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST). After earning her PhD in Marine Environmental Science from the University of Oldenburg in Germany, she has focused her career on marine chemical ecology, larval biology, and coastal conservation, particularly within the mudflats and reef systems of Hong Kong. Beyond her research, she is a distinguished leader in pedagogical innovation, spearheading the integration of Virtual Reality (VR) and Augmented Reality (AR) through projects like "Ocean Odyssey" to enhance student engagement in marine biology. Her contributions to environmental protection and educational technology have earned her significant accolades, including a Silver Medal at the 2025 International Exhibition of Inventions Geneva for her work in environmental recycling.
