HKUST takes pride in being a community that celebrates diversity and values individuals with varying backgrounds and perspectives. Regardless of your ethnic or racial background, gender or religious affiliation, you will feel welcome here among like-minded individuals. We are dedicated to fostering an inclusive environment where all students can thrive. Through targeted initiatives and inclusive programs, we empower students from all backgrounds to achieve their academic and personal aspirations.
Celebrating Women’s Achievements & Inspiring Inclusion
-
HKUST is committed to achieving gender parity and actively promotes diversity and the reduction of stereotypes for a more equitable society, especially in STEM fields. In celebration of International Women's Day (IWD), the university organizes a range of events every year, including a book corner celebrating women's achievements and encourage individuals to participate in these events or become ambassadors to share the message in person or on social media.
The Women Faculty Association (WFA) at HKUST was established in 2011 by a group of dedicated women faculty members from all schools of the university. The Association provides mentoring and support networks for women faculty and students, organizes seminars and forums, supports university initiatives, and has established scholarships and camps to encourage women's participation in underrepresented fields.
The WISE Scholarship established by HKUST aims to encourage high-achieving female students to pursue studies in science, engineering, or interdisciplinary studies by providing financial support and recognition. The scholarship not only recognizes academic excellence but also considers non-academic talents, achievements in science and technology competitions, and interview performance.
The Women in Business (WIB) at HKUST aims to empower women, introduce aspiring executives to professionals, and close the gender gap in leadership. WIB offers mentorship and projects for students, such as the Project Leadership Program, which enhances students’ professional development by connecting them with successful female industry leaders.
Embracing Global Perspectives: Students from Different Countries
-
At HKUST, we celebrate the rich tapestry of cultures brought by our international student body. With students of more than 70 nationalities, we are committed to fostering an inclusive environment. Our initiatives include cultural exchange programs, international student orientation, and scholarships. Additionally, outreach programs are also launched to raise awareness and encourage applications from targeted countries, helping to build a multi-cultural learning community that enriches the educational experience for all.
Throughout the academic year, the HKUST community hosts various events such as the Mid-autumn Festival Carnival, where students showcase their heritage through food, dance, and art.
The International Students Association (ISA) is the third largest organization on campus. It represents the interests of overseas students while promoting cultural exchange within the campus. ISA hosts over 20 events per year, including a Welcoming Party for exchange and full-time students, a Futsal Tournament, and Summer Storage.
The Global Learner Scholarship is designed to enhance the diversity of the student community by attracting high-caliber international students. It is available for outstanding students from the "Belt and Road Initiative" and other countries that rarely come to Hong Kong to study (such as Japan and Brazil) who are applying for undergraduate programs at HKUST. This scholarship reflects HKUST's commitment to fostering a multicultural academic environment and supporting international students in their educational pursuits.
Empowering Underrepresented High Achieving Scholars
-
The university is committed to empowering underrepresented high-achieving scholars through targeted initiatives. These initiatives include offering special admission schemes, scholarships, and tailored academic resources to ensure their success. The university nurtures diverse talents by fostering inclusive environments and providing access to learning opportunities. Additionally, outreach programs aim to raise awareness and encourage these groups' applications, helping build a vibrant, dynamic community that enriches the educational experience for all.
Outstanding students with diverse talents can be admitted through various admissions schemes, including the Student Athletes Admissions Scheme (SAAS), and the School Nominations Direct Admission Scheme (SNDAS). Some excel in art or sports, some started profitable businesses at a young age, while some have planned to pursue their innovative ideas at the University. Alongside their academic pursuits, the talents of these students are poised to thrive through the University’s holistic education and personalized support.
HKUST is committed to ensuring that students are not deprived of the right to receive education due to financial problems. Apart from scholarships, students can apply for financial aid through different schemes. The university also works with NGOs, such as Second Chance, to support bright scholars in need through various projects.
Supporting low-income students is essential for promoting equity in higher education. These scholars may encounter challenges that limit their educational opportunities and success due to economic or systemic barriers. By providing targeted resources, scholarships, and partnerships with education departments and NGOs around the world, universities can empower these young individuals to thrive. Empowering low-income students not only fosters their academic success but also cultivates a diverse student body that reflects a wide range of experiences and perspectives. This investment strengthens the entire academic community.
We encourage local athletes to pursue undergraduate studies at local universities through sports achievement-based admissions. HKUST has set up the Student Athletes Admissions Scheme (SAAS).
SAAS applicants would receive special admissions consideration based on their sports achievements. Successful applicants would enjoy scholarships, a living allowance, our full support, and great flexibility in their study arrangements, allowing them to pursue their sporting and academic goals simultaneously.
The Shaw Auditorium is home to HKUST's cultural activities and a landmark for large-scale events. It provides flexibility and possibilities to create a vibrant arts and cultural scene at the University.
As a multi-purpose auditorium with a seating capacity of around 850 for concerts and over 1,300 in flat-floor configurations, the venue hosts various events, such as concerts, theater performances, lectures, exhibitions, and ceremonies.
The Shaw Auditorium aims to bring arts, music, and other intellectually stimulating events to the University's more technically oriented students and their respective communities.
