Overview
Description

The BSc in Quantitative Social Analysis prepares students to fulfill the rapidly growing need in the business, government, and non-profit sectors for the analysis of social data and interpretation and presentation of results. In all of these sectors, the increasing demand for employees with relevant skills is driven by a rapid growth in the volume and complexity of social data being collected online and offline.

This program provides integrated training in social science theory and evidence, statistical methods, the analysis of social data, and the interpretation and presentation of results. This is delivered through required courses that offer foundational training in quantitative methods and social science paradigms, electives that offer advanced methodological training and opportunities for deeper engagement with social science topics, and a capstone project in which students apply their newly learned skills to analyze the topic of their choice. For the social science topics, students choose from a menu of courses in sociology, political science, economics, and other disciplines offered by the Division of Social Science. For the methodological training, students choose from a menu of courses offered by the Division of Social Science, the Department of Mathematics, and other units.

Through this training, students learn how to apply advanced quantitative methods to complex datasets in a way that accounts for the unique challenges associated with the analysis of social data and reflects an understanding of existing social theory and evidence. They learn how to identify a research question, collect and manage complex social data, carry out analysis, and develop, test, and refine hypotheses informed by social science theory.

Overview
Description

The School of Humanities and Social Science (SHSS) prepares students to become leading global citizens of the 21st century by cultivating the communication, critical thinking, moral reasoning, and analytical skills necessary to thrive in a rapidly changing world. With Hong Kong’s largest interdisciplinary program in the humanities and social sciences, SHSS courses cover more than 15 academic disciplines and include creative arts offerings in music, writing, and film.

Some believe that "soft skills" are hard to learn, and yet they are the most enduring of all; they are retained years after graduating from university, as one adapts to new employment opportunities and communities. SHSS embraces this reality. Our school is known for global best practice in undergraduate training through the use of innovative pedagogies such as blended online courses, digital technology, group projects, service learning, multimedia assessments, fieldwork, and research opportunities.

Our strategic partnerships with leading universities worldwide offer students and faculty ample international opportunities for collaborative research, in-residence exchanges, joint student training, and dual degree programs. The SHSS community extends well beyond HKUST’s physical campus.

Overview

Overview

We prepare graduates to work in the business, government, or non-profit sectors, which are in increasing need of employees with quantitative analytical skills who also understand the complexities and challenges of working with social data and are able to communicate results to decision-makers. Various forms of social data are accumulating rapidly, creating a need for employees who have the right combination of hard skills for effective data analysis and soft skills to interpret and present the results to audiences of decision-makers, colleagues, stakeholders, and the public.
