Students who wish to spend more time exploring their interests may apply and be admitted to the School of Engineering without a major. They will be able to apply to Chemical Engineering during the Major Selection Exercise at the end of the first two or three semesters.

Chemical engineers use the principles of physical, chemical and natural sciences to solve problems related to applied chemistry in manufacturing processes and plants. Students learn to design manufacturing plants; transform raw materials into valuable products and purify the products to meet consumer demands; meet high quality standards for manufacturing; automate plants to make production safe and economical; minimize waste and pollution; market and sell products at a profit; and work effectively with chemical engineering equipment.

"Studying in CBE gave me plenty of options of industries to work in after graduation, from textiles and beverages to petroleum and fuel cells. Because of the freedom and flexibility offered in CBE, I was able to refocus my education towards renewable energy technology, when I originally chose to study Chemical Engineering to get into the oil and gas industry. I was also able to complete a research option under Prof. Richard Lakerveld and get experience writing academic papers. Despite being a foreigner and not speaking very good Cantonese, I still enjoyed my time in CBE, as my classmates and professors were very welcoming!"
