Description

This engaging course is designed to highlight the fascinating connections between Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) through the lens of everyday sensing technologies. Aimed at secondary students, the course seeks to ignite interest in STEM education by combining theoretical concepts with practical applications.

Students will work collaboratively in teams or independently to deepen their understanding of technology through interactive and enjoyable activities. Through a blend of lectures and hands-on experiences, participants will explore key engineering principles, including temperature and light detection, sound generation, signal processing, and color recognition. Building on foundational high school knowledge in science and mathematics, students will delve into advanced technologies and their real-world applications.

By engaging in hands-on programming exercises, students will gain practical experience with various devices, enhancing their skills while fostering creativity and problem-solving abilities.

Prof. Tim WOO
Description

Prof Kam-Tim Woo received his BEng, MPhil and PhD degrees from the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology in 1995, 1997 and 2005, respectively, all in Electrical and Electronic Engineering. He received first prize in IEEE Student Paper Contest for Undergraduate Students (Hong Kong Chapter) and second prize in Varisty Competition in Electronic Design in 1994. He was a recipient of the Sir Edward Youde Memorial Fellowship in 1995 for his MPhil. studies in motion control.

Man Fung CHEUNG
Description

Dr. Man Fung Cheung earned his bachelor’s degree from the Chinese University of Hong Kong in 2004, followed by a PhD from the University of Texas at Austin in 2011. He joined the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) in 2012 and currently serves as an Assistant Professor of Science Education.
 

In addition to his university teaching responsibilities, Dr. Cheung is committed to nurturing the next generation of science students. His contributions include organizing the Hong Kong Physics Olympiad, developing online learning modules as part of the JSSOSS initiative by the Education Bureau (EDB), and teaching courses at HKUST’s Center for the Development of the Gifted and Talented.
