Engineering with an Extended Major in Artificial Intelligence
Students who wish to spend more time exploring various engineering disciplines before embarking on a major program should apply to "Engineering with an Extended Major in Artificial Intelligence". They can select their preferred engineering department (or a joint-school/interdisciplinary program) through the Major Selection Exercise no later than the end of Year 1. [Students interested in the Department of Computer Science and Engineering (CSE), the BEng in Computer Engineering (CPEG) Program and the BEng in Microelectronics and Integrated Circuits (MEIC) Program are encouraged to apply for department-based admission due to tight quota.]

Department-based Admission
Students who already have confirmed passion for a particular engineering discipline, and do not plan to explore other disciplines should apply directly for choice(s) under department-based admission (7 choices in total). Students admitted through department-based admission will be able to apply for opting in the Extended Major in AI at the end of Year 1, except those admitted to the Department of Computer Science and Engineering (CSE) and the BEng in Computer Engineering (CPEG) Program.
Overview

The world is changing fast. Artificial intelligence (AI) has come to define society today in ways we never anticipated. For example, AI makes it possible for us to unlock our smartphones with our faces, ask our virtual assistants questions and receive vocalized answers. The World Economic Forum’s “The Future of Jobs 2018” report predicts that there will be 58 million new jobs in AI by 2022. Companies and individuals that do not keep up with some of the major tech trends run the risk of being left behind. To promptly equip our students for this challenge, the pioneering “Engineering+AI” program is designed as an extended major to enrich major study with cross-disciplinary AI technology applications.

Students in ENGG+AI will study courses in the AI area such as fundamentals of artificial intelligence, machine learning, data visualization, image processing, etc. The curriculum is cross-disciplinary and practical. On top of solid knowledge in an engineering discipline, students will learn innovative application of AI in their major fields. In addition, students will gain cross-disciplinary problem-solving skills and professional insights through a Design Thinking course and Professional Seminars in AI. The School of Engineering will offer a course that enables students in the Extended Major to appreciate the applications of AI to various engineering domains. The required Capstone Project, with strong AI components , enables students to practice AI applications on real world problems. Students take approximately one additional course per term. Upon satisfactory completion, students will earn a “BEng in one of the engineering disciplines with an Extended Major in Artificial Intelligence”.

The knowledge of AI, together with cross-disciplinary problem-solving skills, will provide students with additional competitive edge in the job market. These students are more self-motivated and open-minded in new learnings and these attributes are essential and appreciated by most employers.
