Step 1
Offer Acceptance

Deadline:  Please refer to the date stipulated in the offer letter

You are advised to read through this offer acceptance guideline before you confirm your offer acceptance on the application system and pay the deposit to reserve your admissions place.

The paid deposit is non-refundable and non-transferable. It will be treated as part of the tuition fee for Fall 2025. A refund could only be arranged if a student fails to meet our admissions condition(s).

If you are unable to pay the deposit through the online application system by credit card, you may settle it via bank remittance. Please click here for detailed instructions.

Step 2
Confirm Conditional Offer

Deadline:  Please refer to the date stipulated in the offer letter

If you have a conditional offer, please upload the supporting documents that show your fulfillment of the conditions as stated in the offer letter soon as they are available.

If you are required to satisfy the University's English Language Admissions Requirement, please refer to the list of recognized English qualifications here.

For documents in any language other than English or Chinese, please provide a translation of the document in English certified by your school or an approving authority.

Step 3
Apply for Student Visa

To pursue study in Hong Kong, non-local students are required to obtain a student visa issued by the Immigration Department of Hong Kong Special Administrative Region.  Please visit our Online Application System for Student Visa/ Entry Permit and follow the instructions accordingly.  If your application is approved, we will send the student visa label to you in early / mid-August.

Remarks:

Please ensure that all supporting documents are appended with your application. It normally takes at least 6-8 weeks to process the visa application.

Step 4
Settle Tuition Fee

Deadline:  Before student registration (for the first payment) and before the commencement of Spring Term (for the second payment)

You will receive the payment advice containing details of tuition fee and other required fees you in July (or after offer confirmation).

The tuition fee is HKD 185,000 (non-local students) per academic year. Payment will be made in two equal installments before the commencement of the Fall and Spring Term respectively.

Students with an admissions scholarship from the University may refer here regarding scholarship payment arrangements.

Student Housing Application

At HKUST, there are 9 on-campus and 1 off-campus residential halls with rooms ranging from single to triple occupancy.

Application is expected to open in summer.

Step 6
Document Verification & Student Registration

Registration date: From July

You are required to present the original copies of all academic documents that substantiate your qualifications on Registration day for our verification.  Your scanned copies submitted to the online application system or as email attachment are for reference only.  For details on which documents to bring, please click here.

Step 7
Academic Advising & Course Enrollment

Date: Early August and during the add/drop period at the beginning of the academic term

The academic advising team of your School/Program office will contact you prior to the arrival for course pre-enrollment.  

You will be invited to attend the academic advising sessions in late August.  Our academic advisors will give you the advice on course selection and credit transfer arrangements.

For advanced credit arrangement, you may be granted up to 30 credits and complete your studies one year early. You could visit The Academic Records and Registration (ARR) for more details.

New Student Orientation

Event date: August

The University and student societies will organize a series of orientation activities for new students before the start of the academic year.  The New Student Orientation website is designed to help you make yourself at home in the University.  Details will be available in June 2025.

How much is the deposit?
Description

The deposit will be HK$20,000 for international students, and HK$5,000 for local students. You are considered as a local student if it does not require you to apply for a student visa to study at HKUST. It can be paid online via Visa/MasterCard, Alipay, WeChat Pay or bank transfer. 

An acceptance deposit is only required to be paid once for securing admissions place, if you are given offer for your other choice(s) later on, you are not required to pay another deposit again. Please note that the deposit serves as a main part of the process to secure your admissions place at HKUST.

Will I receive multiple offers from HKUST?
Description

You may like to know that all selected program choices are considered individually and decision outcome for each choice may be released at different time with different acceptance deadlines. Once an application result is available, we will send you an email notification to view the status update online via our online application system.

Regardless of the ordering of your choices, if you are interested in studying the program you have been offered, you are encouraged to accept and pay the deposit online by the required deadline. An acceptance deposit is only required to be paid once for securing admissions place, if you are given offer for your other choice(s) later on, you are not required to pay another deposit again. Please note that the deposit serves as a main part of the process to secure your admissions place at HKUST.

Can I re-prioritize my offered programs?
Description

You may re-prioritize your offered programs during the acceptance period if you are given multiple offers. Kindly note that the priority of your program choices will be confirmed as final once you accept your offer online.

Can I appeal against the admissions decision?
Description

For students who wish to appeal against the admissions decision after receiving final exam results, they may send a request email to ugadmit@ust.hk to proceed further.

Can I request for deposit refund?
Description

The deposit can only be refunded in the case where you could not meet the condition stated on your conditional offer. It is non-refundable in all circumstances.

How would I know whether or not I am awarded an admissions scholarship?
Description

Normally, admissions scholarship offers are issued together with admissions offers. You may learn more on our Fees and Scholarships page.

How do I apply for student visa?
Description

After accepting an admissions offer, all non-local students should apply for a student visa/entry permit. Please follow the instructions stated on your offer letter and send your visa application package to our office. Our admissions officer will collaborate with the Immigration Department of Hong Kong to facilitate your student visa application.

What documents should I bring to HKUST?
Description

You should bring your admissions letter issued by HKUST, email or letter by HKUST confirming your student hall place, academic records, official transcripts and proof of tuition fee payment for registration.

Can I apply for credit transfer? How do I know how many credits I can get?
Description

HKUST recognizes that a number of applicants may have taken advanced courses prior to their admissions to university, eligible applicants may receive an admissions offer with credit transfer. You may be granted up to 30 credits which will count towards the 120 credits required for graduation. As HKUST assesses applications on a case by case basis, it is not possible to confirm the number of credit transfer at this point in time without reviewing your application. What are the requirements for student insurance? How do I purchase the student insurance?
Description

The University has a group personal accident insurance policy for all students and non-local students MUST sign up for the Compulsory Medical Insurance Scheme. Further details can be found here.
