Students who wish to spend more time exploring their interests may apply and be admitted to the School of Engineering without a major. They will be able to apply to Electronic Engineering during the Major Selection Exercise at the end of the first two or three semesters.

Electricity facilitates the flow of both energy and information, and the technologies developed by electronic engineers have vastly improved our quality of life. The BEng in Electronic Engineering program covers technologies with applications in fields such as artificial intelligence, big data, robotics, and the Internet of Things. These advanced technologies include signal and information processing, communications and networks, computer engineering and embedded system design, robotics and automation, microelectronics and integrated circuit design, photonics and optics, and biomedical electronics. These areas are critical to the growth of our information-based society and mastering them opens up a vast range of career opportunities.

Career Prospects

Diverse career paths are available to ECE graduates. Upon graduation, they take up diverse technical and managerial positions in the industry, such as electronic engineers, communication engineers, system analysts and designers, information technologists, and computer project managers. Many choose to continue their studies at postgraduate level. Even graduates who choose not to pursue technical careers find that the engineering training they obtained at HKUST has given them a competitive advantage over their co-workers.

Our graduates’ employers includes many world-class local and overseas companies, such as ASM, ASTRI, Fujitsu, Huawei, Hutchison, Lenovo, Microsoft, National Semiconductor, PCCW, Philips, SmarTone, Solomon Systech, and Varitronix.

“I am Prabhansh Jain, a Year 2 student from India studying electronic engineering at HKUST. I love learning how AI, electronic circuits, and embedded systems work, which led me to choose ECE. The Department gives me all types of options to broaden my studies. In my first year, I took several ECE courses that made me particularly interested in the technical field of engineering.”
