Description
Department of Computer Science and Engineering
Students who have decided to pursue a major in Computer Science are strongly encouraged to apply to the Department directly. By the end of their first academic year, they can freely choose between a BEng in Computer Science (COMP) or a BEng in Artificial Intelligence (AI). If they are interested in pursuing a double major with a BSc in Computer Science (COSC) as one of their majors, they can submit an application after completing their first academic year.

Description
Engineering with an Extended Major in Artificial Intelligence
Students who wish to spend more time exploring various engineering disciplines before embarking on a major program can apply to "Engineering with an Extended Major in Artificial Intelligence". However, entrance to the Department of Computer Science and Engineering through major selection is subject to competition due to a tight quota. Students are also required to drop the Extended Major in AI if they join the Department of Computer Science and Engineering.

Overview
Description

The Department of Computer Science and Engineering (CSE) comprises renowned educators and researchers who possess cutting-edge knowledge in areas such as big data, cybersecurity, artificial intelligence, cloud computing, networking, graphics, social media, software development, and computation theory.

BEng in Computer Science (COMP)

Computer science covers the application of computer technology to solve important problems in the scientific, engineering, and commercial domains. Our BEng COMP program offers a comprehensive education that cultivates problem-solving skills necessary for tackling computational problems across core areas, including programming, data structures and algorithms, operating systems, and software engineering. Students are then able to explore diverse areas of computer science, such as databases and data mining, networking, embedded systems, computer graphics, image processing, artificial intelligence, machine learning, computer vision, computer security, and theoretical computer science.

BSc in Computer Science (COSC)

The COSC program is uniquely designed to be one half of a double major declaration. Students enrolled in COSC are required to be simultaneously enrolled in at least one other major, including but not limited to, Mathematics, Physics, Quantitative Finance, Quantitative Social Analysis, or Biotechnology. Students who wish to pursue a double major can either start with Computer Science and declare their second major afterward or enrol in another major and then add COSC.

Career Prospects
Description

BEng in Computer Science (COMP)

About 15-20% of our COMP graduates pursue postgraduate studies immediately after graduation. While many of them take up research opportunities in Hong Kong, particularly at HKUST, some go abroad to study at top universities such as Harvard University, Stanford University, Princeton University, Yale University, Carnegie-Mellon University, Cornell University, the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, the University of Michigan, the University of Texas at Austin, the University of Southern California, the University of California at Santa Barbara, and the University of Toronto.

Our graduates are usually successful in entering the professions of their choice. Some join famous computing-related companies such as Google, IBM, HP, Intel, Baidu, Microsoft, and Oracle, while others prefer different fields, particularly the business sector, and launch their careers at companies such as Credit Suisse, Morgan Stanley, Merrill Lynch, Goldman Sachs, PricewaterhouseCoopers, HSBC, Hang Seng Bank, and Bank of China.

BSc in Computer Science (COSC)

The majority of COSC graduates pursue postgraduate studies; some start with Master’s degrees and some embark directly on Ph.D. degrees. The topics of their further studies depend on their interests and the other major in which they were first enrolled. While many of our alumni have pursued further studies in computer science, some have gone directly to doctoral studies in economics (Princeton), physics (Yale), applied math (Harvard), and neuroscience (Johns Hopkins), among others.

COSC graduates who do not undertake postgraduate studies usually pursue careers in areas related to software or finance. The actual jobs they take up often depend upon the other major in which they were enrolled. For example, COSC graduates whose second major was mathematics can work in algorithmic trading positions.
