Overview
Description

The BSc in Sustainable and Green Finance (SGFN) program is the first of its kind in Hong Kong. It is designed to equip students with the knowledge and skills essential to filling the global talent gap for top-level green and sustainable finance experts and to help develop Hong Kong into a leading green finance center.

SGFN is an emerging discipline that aims to increase the level of financial flow from the public, private, and not-for-profit sectors to sustainability development priorities at the national and global levels.

With clear milestones and targets, the collective effort of nations to address climate change creates tremendous opportunities related to new energy technologies, the development of financial markets (e.g. carbon pricing and trading to facilitate the replacement of fossil energy), the digitization of transportation infrastructure to reduce energy consumption, the market for green and sustainability-linked bonds, and other means of funding sustainability projects.

Therefore, there will continue to be a strong demand for professionals knowledgeable in finance, sustainability, climate change, and related technological solutions to lead and integrate environmental, social, and governance (ESG) strategies into finance and investments.

Jointly offered by the Business School and the Division of Environment and Sustainability, the interdisciplinary nature of the BSc SGFN program will provide students with a broad-based learning experience that spans business as well as environment, science, and technology. It will also equip students with a global outlook on the development of SGFN. Some of the required courses are listed below:

Business and Finance:
Derivative Securities
ESG Investing
Green Finance Case Analyses

Environment and Sustainability:

Career Prospects
Description

Since 2007, over USD1.2 trillion has been invested worldwide to advance the global transformation of energy into renewable energy by the end of 2020.

China’s rapid economic growth over the past 40 years has been accompanied by extensive environmental degradation. To meet the country’s carbon neutrality pledge, the transition to greener growth requires the mobilization of large amounts of funding. China has rapidly expanded its green bond market, which now ranks second in the world.

Hong Kong plays significant roles to support China’s green finance market, including policy research, drafting green finance codes, and leading market funds to support public and private institutions investing in green and low-emission activities.

The program intends to help students become effective leaders and managers in ESG, impact investment, sustainable and green project financing, sustainable and green instrument and product development, and other related fields. The graduates of this program will be in high demand, and they will contribute to the economic and social development of Hong Kong, the Greater Bay Area, and beyond.
