Business and Management
Students who wish to spend more time exploring their interests may apply and be admitted to the School of Business and Management without a major. They will be able to apply to Economics and Finance during the Major Selection Exercise at the end of the first two or three semesters.

Compared to the BBA in Economics, our BSc in Economics and Finance (ECOF) places greater emphasis on the use of quantitative methods and techniques to form an in-depth understanding of the modern economy and public policy. Students interested in economic research may enroll in the Honors Thesis Courses in their final year to further develop their research skills and take the opportunity to work closely with a faculty member on their own research project.

This program is suitable for students who aspire to pursue careers that require strong analytical and quantitative skills, such as in investment banks, consulting, data analysis, and economics. The sophisticated analytical training and quantitative research skills offered by the program also prepare students to pursue further studies.

The flexibility of our curriculum design allows ECOF students to pursue additional majors in other business areas. Students may also take minors offered by other schools at HKUST. Synergizing economics and finance, the program makes ECOF graduates competitive in pursuing a range of careers across business fields.

Extended Major
ECOF students may apply for the extended major in Artificial Intelligence or Digital Media and Creative Arts at the end of the 3rd term of study, if they satisfy the extended major requirement. Students completing the extended major will graduate with a title bearing both the traditional major subject they selected and the extended major. For more details, refer to “Business with an Extended Major in AI / DMCA.

Career Prospects

Our graduates have a competitive edge in a range of career fields, especially those requiring strong analytical and quantitative skills, such as being the data analyst at Bloomberg L.P.,  analyst at Deutsche Bank AG and finance associate at MTR Corporation Limited. Some graduates are employed to make economic strategy in financial institutes and the government.

The program’s sophisticated training in analysis and quantitative research also prepares students to pursue further studies at prestigious universities. ECOF students have recently received offers from Cambridge University, Harvard University, the University of Oxford, and the University of Toronto, among others.
